A student who received RM1,500 for SPM results says she was pressured to spend RM500 on a family gathering, sparking debate on priorities and boundaries.
A young woman recently shared how she was caught in a dilemma after being told to use a portion of her cash prize for a family gathering.
In a post on Threads, the student said she was awarded RM1,500 at a school ceremony following the Malaysian Certificate of Education (SPM) examination.
“I was planning to use the money to buy a laptop for university later, but suddenly my mother’s siblings pressured us to organise a celebration,” she said.

The young woman was later asked by her mother to spend RM500 from the money, leaving her torn between her family’s request and her desire to purchase a laptop for her higher education.
Netizens advised the student to prioritise her own needs in this situation, reminding her that the money was meant for her studies.
“Who is celebrating who here? Your money is your right,” a commenter said.
“No. Buy a laptop. In fact, they should be the ones buying you a laptop to celebrate your achievement and support you as a stepping stone so you can fly higher,” another wrote.
