KUALA NERUS: Terengganu police will take action against anyone re-posting old photos and videos of floods or disasters on social media which can cause alarm among the public.

Terengganu police chief Datuk Mazli Mazlan (pix) said he is issuing the warning because there is often a recycle of photos and videos of past disasters that can stir public anxiety every time a flood occurs.

He said anyone who commits the offence can be prosecuted under Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998 and can be fined a maximum of RM50,000 or one-year imprisonment or both.

“Police will not compromise with any party that undermines public order. We ask the public to tip off the police so that action can be taken,” he said at the Tok Jembal temporary evacuation centre (PPS) here today, where 124 victims from 54 families have been sheltering since it opened at 7 am.

Mazli also advised the public to reduce activities outside their homes and on the road because many places around Kuala Nerus and Kuala Terengganu have been inundated.

According to him, all district police chiefs have been instructed to increase monitoring in high-risk areas after several motorcycle accidents due to potholes and damaged traffic lights.

“The floodwaters also disrupted the traffic light system in eight locations around Kuala Terengganu and Kuala Nerus. However, we have designated traffic police to control traffic movement and I also ask parents to restrict the movement of children during this flood season to avoid mishaps,“ he said. -Bernama
