IPOH: The Gunung Liang climbing site in South Perak has been closed to the public with immediate effect until further notice.

Perak Forestry Department director Datuk Mohd Basri Abdul Manaf issued the closure order.

The department stated on its Facebook page that the closure does not apply to its official programmes like the Climbing Track Conservation Program in Permanent Forest Reserves.

Section 47 of the National Forestry Act 1984 stipulates that violating this order is an offence punishable by a fine not exceeding RM10,000 or imprisonment for up to three years.

Mustaqqeem Mansoor was found dead at 3.30 pm on October 16 at the peak of Gunung Liang Barat near Tanjung Malim.

The 34-year-old had joined ten friends for a climb beginning on October 10 from Bukit Fraser in Pahang.

He was last seen by his companions on October 14 during the expedition.

Fire and Rescue Department Air Special Unit personnel airlifted his body from the 1,933-metre summit using an AW189 helicopter at 2.45 pm on October 17.

Raja Permaisuri Bainun Hospital in Ipoh conducted a post-mortem examination confirming hypothermia as the cause of death.

Police have recorded statements from eight individuals including fellow climbers to assist their investigation into the incident. – Bernama
