TAWAU: The Sungai Tamang Health Clinic on Sebatik Island will be reconstructed using the dilapidated clinic allocation.

Health Minister Datuk Seri Dr Dzulkefly Ahmad confirmed the project will utilise RM1 million to RM1.5 million from the MADANI government’s allocation.

The Type 6 health clinic is scheduled for completion before mid-2026.

“I came personally to ensure the construction of the clinic, we cannot wait any longer, it should be developed immediately with the allocation given by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim,“ he told reporters.

He spoke after officiating the new building of Sungai Imam Rural Clinic in Merotai.

The Sungai Tamang Health Clinic has been operating since 1969 and serves approximately 25,000 residents.

Dzulkefly emphasised the government’s commitment to improving rural healthcare facilities.

“This is what is meant by universal health coverage, with no one being left behind,“ he said.

Improvements for Sebatik Island health facilities will include supplying ambulance boats and boats for ministry personnel.

The newly reconstructed Sungai Imam Rural Clinic was highlighted as a benchmark for efficient project delivery.

The old wooden building was demolished on 1 April 2024 and replaced with a concrete structure.

Construction cost RM600,000 and the clinic is set to operate on 31 December 2024.

It will benefit 16,222 residents in the area.

Dzulkefly pledged a more assertive approach to repairing dilapidated clinics across Sabah and nationwide.

He noted his seventh visit to Sabah this year demonstrates the ministry’s focus on the state.

The minister visited six areas involving 16 health facilities during his latest trip.

These inspections aim to ensure facilities provide optimal service and check staff welfare.
