KUALA TERENGGANU: Hulu Terengganu Member of Parliament Datuk Rosol Wahid has dismissed calls to resign to pave the way for a by-election, following his switch from Umno to Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia (Bersatu) recently.

He said the matter was only raised by the ‘losing party’, while many of his supporters agreed with his move.

“The losing party (Umno) should not talk much. I do not have any issues with the people of Hulu Terengganu. out of Umno) are welcomed as it is to defend the people.

“I am also serving (my constituency) as usual, going down to look at the people’s problems, and I’m confident that my victory in the 14th General Election was based on my personal capacity, and the party only played a minor role.

“As an opposition MP (previously with Umno), it was hard for me to help voice out the people’s problems at the Federal-level, and (the) Terengganu (state government) is under PAS. My participation in Bersatu will provide more benefit to the people,“ he said.

He was met by reporters after the opening of the 17th General Assembly of the Terengganu chapter of the Malaysian National Silat Federation (Pesaka) which was officiated by Menteri Besar Dr Ahmad Samsuri Mokhtar here, yesterday.

On Dec 14, Rosol and five other Umno MPs announced their immediate resignation from Umno, the others being Datuk Seri Hamzah Zainudin (Larut, Perak), Datuk Dr Abdul Latiff Ahmad (Mersing, Johor), Datuk Shabudin Yahaya (Tasik Gelugor, Penang) , Datuk Mohamad Fasiah Mohd Fakeh (Sabak Bernam, Selangor) and Datuk Seri Ikmal Hisham Abdul Aziz (Tanah Merah, Kelantan).

Three days later, the Terengganu Umno Youth handed over a memorandum to the Hulu Terengganu Umno Division, urging Rosol to vacate the parliamentary seat.

The memorandum was handed over by Terengganu Umno Youth chief Tengku Haphiz Tengku Putera to Hulu Terengganu Umno Division chief Datuk Rozi Mamat during a special meeting held with party leaders in the constituency. — Bernama
