PETALING JAYA: The Sungai Semenyih Water Treatment Plant, which was shut down yesterday evening due to odour pollution, resumed full operations this morning.
According to Pengurusan Air Selangor Sdn Bhd (Air Selangor), the plant began operating again at 6.30am, with 357 million litres of reduced daily treated water production due to the temporary shut down.
“The process to increase the water level in the plant is ongoing, before water supply can be distributed to the affected areas,” Air Selangor Customer Relationship and Communications Department head Abdul Raof Ahmad.
Abdul Raof said water tankers have been mobilised and 10 local service centres have been activated beginning 8am today to assist those affected, before water supply is fully restored.
“We are doing all we can do speed up the water restoration, and cooperation by all our customers is very much appreciated,” he said.
Last night, Air Selangor confirmed that the Sungai Semenyih Water Treatment Plant had to be shut down once again after odour pollution was detected, affecting 204 areas and 372,031 households in Selangor.
It noted that this was the fourth such pollution incident this year alone to cause main water treatment plants to shut down and unscheduled water disruptions to affect large areas.
“We have brought this issue of raw water contamination to the authorities’ attention several times and our concerns that this water pollution issue will cause disruption to the water supply to the consumer,“ it said.
Air Selangor had also said the pollution source was identified to have come from the wastewater treatment plant from Bandar Mahkota and have asked the relevant parties to take immediate action to stop the pollution.
