Lamborghini Lanzador will not proceed as a full battery-electric production model, according to a report by The Sunday Times.

Lamborghini CEO Stephan Winkelmann reportedly told the British newspaper that demand for full EVs within the brand’s target market is currently “close to zero”, prompting the decision to halt development of the all-electric model.

The Lanzador was unveiled as a concept in 2023 and originally slated for a 2028 production debut. It was presented as a high-riding, dual-motor, all-wheel-drive model producing over one megawatt, equivalent to 1,360 PS. Lamborghini avoided labelling it an SUV or crossover, though at 1.5 metres tall it sat lower than the Lamborghini Urus.

Speaking to The Sunday Times, Winkelmann reportedly said Lamborghini customers continue to prioritise the sound and mechanical feedback of internal combustion engines. “EVs, in their current form, struggle to deliver this specific emotional connection,” he was quoted as saying. The company will continue producing combustion engines “for as long as possible,” subject to regulatory allowances.

He also reportedly ruled out an electric version of the Urus.

A fourth Lamborghini model is still in development and could retain elements of the Lanzador concept. However, rather than being fully electric, it is now expected to adopt a plug-in hybrid powertrain. Like the Lamborghini Revuelto, Lamborghini Temerario and Lamborghini Urus SE, it will form part of an electrified lineup built around PHEV technology.

Winkelmann reportedly described investing heavily in a full EV programme before sufficient market demand exists as financially irresponsible, calling it potentially “an expensive hobby” for the company.

The decision comes amid cooling momentum for high-end performance EVs, a segment the Lanzador would have entered. While Winkelmann did not entirely close the door on a future electric Lamborghini, stating “never say never,” he indicated that for the foreseeable future the brand’s strategy will centre on hybridised internal combustion models.
