AFA Prime Bhd has issued 2,122 letters of demand worth RM21,181 for tailgating and toll regulation violations since 2023.

KUALA LUMPUR: AFA Prime Bhd, the concession holder for the Kuala Lumpur-Karak Expressway and East Coast Expressway Phase 1 has issued 2,122 letters of demand (LOD) worth RM21,181 to motorists for tailgating and toll regulation violations since 2023.

Its general manager, Ismaliza Ibrahim said 571 LODs worth RM6,177.80 were issued in 2023, 853 LODs worth RM8,190 were issued in 2024 and 698 LOD worth RM6,813.20 were issued last year for tailgating to evade paying toll, hitting the toll bar and not stopping in the manual lane.

“The offences do not necessarily rise during festive seasons but occur on normal days. We have also caught motorists committing such offences up to 30 times with the same vehicle,” she said at a media conference on a special tailgating and toll offences enforcement operation at Gombak Toll Plaza today,

She said that 95 per cent of offenders used private vehicles, with most cases happening along the Kuala Lumpur-Karak Expressway and several locations at the East Coast Expressway 1, including Kuantan and that even though the number of LODs issued in two years were high, the repayment amount was low, at less than one per cent.

“We will work with the authorities to obtain the vehicle owners’ information before issuing the letter of demand specifically for offenders who commit offences more than three times,” she said.

Ismaliza said AFA used CCTV and automatic detection to identify each offence, including tailgating and hitting toll bars, which is punishable under Section 8 of the Federal Roads (Private Management) (Amendment) Act 1994.
