Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim says no race or political party should be denied the right to participate in the government
PUTRAJAYA: Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim today stressed that no race or political party should be denied the right to participate in the government, in line with democratic principles and the spirit of the Federal Constitution.
He said the government must reflect the reality of Malaysia’s diverse society by ensuring the participation of various communities and political parties in governance, thereby promoting inclusivity and representing the will of the people.
“We in the government and public institutions must represent Malaysians of all races and religions. While Malays form the majority and the nation’s core policies remain clear and undisputed, we must also uphold democratic principles by respecting the choices made by the people.
“It would be arrogant for anyone to decide that a particular race or political party should be denied the right to participate and contribute to the government’s agenda. I am emphasising this because political campaigns can sometimes create tension and lead to excessive rhetoric.
“I hope such excesses will be corrected, as they do not send a positive message to the public,” he said when addressing the Communications Ministry’s monthly assembly here today.
Also present were Communications Minister Datuk Fahmi Fadzil, his deputy Teo Nie Ching, Chief Secretary to the Government Tan Sri Shamsul Azri Abu Bakar and Communications Ministry Secretary-General Datuk Abdul Halim Hamzah.
Anwar also reminded Malaysians not to allow political differences to fuel racial sentiments or divisive rhetoric that could undermine social harmony.
He said differing political views are a normal feature of any democratic system, but such differences must be managed with wisdom, guided by the principles of humanity, justice and mutual respect.
“My brothers and sisters, we all have our own sentiments and are raised in different environments. However, that should never lead us to adopt inhumane attitudes towards others. We do not choose to be Malay, Chinese or Indian.
“We do not choose our skin colour or background. That is why, in Islam, respect for diversity is a fundamental principle,” he said.
Anwar also stressed that Malaysia is founded on several core principles, with the Federal Constitution serving as the nation’s enduring framework regardless of changes in political leadership.
“Our country is built on fundamental principles. Governments and leaders may change, but the framework enshrined in the Federal Constitution remains our guiding compass,” he said.
