Cloud seeding operations in Perak have successfully raised water levels at two key catchment areas, securing water supply and power generation.

IPOH: Cloud seeding operations conducted last week in Perak have been declared a success. The operations targeted the Bukit Merah and Lake Temengor catchment areas.

Perak Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Saarani Mohamad confirmed the increased water levels. He said the intervention was crucial for water resource management and hydroelectric power generation.

“To address the water shortage in Lake Temengor, Lake Banding, and Lake Chenderoh – if we do not carry out cloud seeding and it fails to rain – it disrupts and affects the feasibility of electricity generation,” Saarani explained. He added that low water levels prevent Tenaga Nasional Berhad from releasing water.

This situation causes dry conditions from Kuala Kangsar to Teluk Intan. It subsequently affects water intake points operated by the Perak Water Board and the Department of Irrigation and Drainage.

Saarani made these comments during a walkabout at a Ramadan bazaar. The operations were initiated following an announcement by Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi.

On February 10, Zahid stated cloud seeding would occur in Johor, Kedah, and Perak. The measure was a response to depleting dam levels caused by continuous hot weather.
