Company director pleads not guilty to insulting Islam and police

A company director faces three charges, including insulting Islam and using criminal force against a police officer, pleading not guilty in Alor Setar court.

ALOR SETAR: A company director pleaded not guilty to three charges, including insulting Islam and using criminal force against a police officer.

Teoh Siew Li, 35, entered her plea before Magistrate Nur Syifa Mohd Hamzah at the Magistrate’s Court here.

The first charge alleges she used criminal force by spitting at a police officer to prevent him from performing his duties.

This offence, under Section 353 of the Penal Code, carries a potential two-year jail term, a fine, or both upon conviction.

The second charge accuses her of uttering insulting words and making an obscene gesture at the same officer.

She faces this charge under Section 509 of the Penal Code, which provides for up to five years’ imprisonment, a fine, or both.

The third charge states she deliberately hurt Muslim religious feelings by uttering words insulting to Islam.

This charge falls under Section 298 of the Penal Code, with a penalty of up to one year in jail, a fine, or both.

All alleged incidents occurred at Jalan Perusahaan 2, Taman Bandar Baru Mergong, at noon on Dec 31.

The court set bail at RM12,000 with one surety and scheduled the next mention for Jan 20.

State Director of Prosecutions Datuk Khairul Anuar Abdul Halim led the prosecution, while the accused was not represented.
