An Indonesian religious teacher is jailed for eight years and six strokes of the cane for sexually assaulting a male student at a Kuala Lumpur school.
KUALA LUMPUR: An Indonesian religious teacher was sentenced to eight years in prison and six strokes of the cane on Monday for sexually assaulting a male student.
Kumpul, 40, pleaded guilty to two charges of committing physical sexual assault against the victim, now aged 11, at a religious primary school in Wangsa Maju.
Judge Tasnim Abu Bakar ordered the sentences for each charge to run consecutively from the date of his arrest on Dec 25, 2025.
The court also ordered Kumpul to undergo counselling during his imprisonment and to be placed under police supervision for two years after his release.
The victim was ordered to undergo counselling and be placed under the supervision of the Social Welfare Department.
The offences allegedly took place in the teacher’s room and a classroom between April 2024 and November 2025.
Deputy public prosecutor Siti Pervinah Mohamad Yusof urged the court to impose a proportionate sentence due to the serious nature of the offences.
“The accused is a teacher who taught Quran, Aqidah and Fiqh, and therefore bore a responsibility to care for and protect the victim,” the prosecution submitted.
Kumpul, who was unrepresented, pleaded for a lighter sentence, citing his role as sole breadwinner for his family and expressing remorse.
