Wife of ex-army chief to face money laundering charge in court

Salwani Anuar, wife of former army chief Muhammad Hafizuddeain Jantan, arrives at Kuala Terengganu court for money laundering charge

KUALA TERENGGANU: Salwani Anuar@Kamaruddin (pic), the wife of former army chief Tan Sri Muhammad Hafizuddeain Jantan, is scheduled to be charged at the Sessions Court here today.

The 27-year-old is expected to face charges related to alleged money laundering activities.

She arrived at the court premises at 8.25 am dressed in a white shirt and black headscarf.

Salwani entered the court building in a wheelchair due to a chronic boil on her thigh.

Last Thursday, she pleaded not guilty at the Kuala Lumpur Sessions Court to a separate charge of receiving RM77,000 in illegal proceeds.

Judge Rosli Ahmad granted her bail of RM30,000 in two sureties for that case.

The charges are linked to a wider Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) investigation dubbed Op Parasit.

On Jan 7, MACC arrested a high-ranking officer and his two wives over alleged tender procurement irregularities for army projects.

The officer was remanded for seven days the following day.

His two wives were remanded for three and six days respectively to assist investigations.

MACC’s probe into the case began on Oct 7, 2025 and is classified as sensitive.

The investigation involves high-ranking officers and carries significant public interest implications.

On Dec 23, 2025, a team of MACC officers conducted preliminary investigations at the Ministry of Defence.

They were examining several army-related projects dating back to 2023.

Salwani Mohd Salleh, 56, pleaded not guilty to the charge under Section 4(1)(b) of the Anti-Money Laundering, Anti-Terrorism Financing and Proceeds of Unlawful Activities Act 2001.

If convicted, she faces imprisonment of up to 15 years and a fine of not less than five times the value of the unlawful proceeds or RM5 million, whichever is higher.

Deputy public prosecutor Maziah Mohaide from the MACC applied for the same bail terms as a previous Kuala Lumpur case, set at RM30,000 in two sureties.

The prosecution also requested the case be transferred to the Kuala Lumpur Sessions Court to be tried jointly with her earlier case and her husband’s.

Defence counsel Fahmi Abd Moin did not object to the bail terms or the transfer application.

Conditions of bail require Salwani to report monthly to the nearest MACC office and surrender her international passport to the court.

Salwani Mohd Salleh, 56, was charged with receiving a total of RM1,525,000, believed to be proceeds from illegal activities, into her bank account.

The alleged offences took place at a bank in Section 7 here between March and May 2023.

Judge Rozilah Salleh set bail at RM100,000 with one surety and ordered the accused to surrender her passport to the court.

Salwani was also instructed to report to the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) office monthly.

Deputy public prosecutor Fahmi Abdul Moin prosecuted, while lawyer Datuk Hasnal Rezua Merican represented the accused.

The MACC investigation into the case began on Oct 7, 2025, and is classified as sensitive.

It involves high-ranking officials and matters of public interest.

On Dec 23, 2025, a team of MACC officers arrived at the Ministry of Defence (MINDEF) to conduct preliminary investigations into several Army-related projects dating back to 2023.

Fahmi, when met by reporters after the court proceedings, said his client is suffering from a chronic boil on her thigh.

She is expected to return to Kuala Lumpur to undergo a medical procedure to remove the boil.

Earlier, Salwani, who entered the courtroom in a wheelchair, was seen making her way to the dock.

She listened to the charges being read while seated.
