Millennials share how they spend free time amid Gen Z rise

From sleep and fitness to travel and gaming, millennials reveal how they unwind while keeping up with younger trends

AS tech-savvy and fast-paced Gen Z continues to shape trends, many millennials are finding themselves reflecting on how they spend their free time and whether they can still keep up.

In a Reddit discussion, a millennial user wondered how others from her generation spend their leisure hours, saying she was curious to know what people her age do in their downtime and was open to suggestions.

The first reply was short and relatable. “Sleep. Sleep is important,” one commenter wrote, pointing to the increasingly stressful pace of modern life.

Another user, aeronauticalingrid, shared a more active routine, saying she focuses on fitness and regularly takes part in high-intensity interval training (HIIT), yoga, pickleball and hiking.

She added that working remotely and being married with no children gives her more flexibility and time.

“Socialising with friends once or twice a week and spending the rest of the time with my family and my partner. Occasionally eating out and going on brunch or dinner dates,” she said, adding that she values maintaining close relationships.

She also revealed that she made nine international trips last year, travelling to destinations such as Hong Kong, Australia, Thailand, Japan and the United States.

In contrast, another user shared a more modest lifestyle. Unmarried and working in the film industry, he said he is not financially secure.

“I rent a room, read lots of books, watch lots of movies and spend time petting a dog. No trading, no savings, and no travelling except for overseas work,” he wrote.

Meanwhile, a financially stable 43-year-old millennial said early investments had allowed him to enjoy frequent travel later in life.

“I’m going to Thailand for two weeks at the end of the month, back in time for Chinese New Year. Then Sydney for two weeks in March, followed by South Korea, and two months in Japan after that. That’s the plan so far this year,” he shared.

He added that he now spends his “adult money” collecting vintage watches and video games.

Many others echoed similar sentiments, saying they enjoy gaming as a way to relieve stress, while some prefer staying home to catch up on sleep or unwind with Netflix.

“The thing I love to do in my free time? Sleep,” one user joked.
