Drugs and drunk driving: Hundreds of motorcycles surrounded at Jalan Tun Razak

Hundreds of motorcycles were seized and 751 summonses issued as police crack down on “mat rempit” activities, drugs, and drunk driving during a massive operation on Jalan Tun Razak, Kuala Lumpur.

KUALA LUMPUR: Hundreds of “mat rempit” who had turned Jalan Tun Razak into a racing circuit and performed dangerous stunts were surrounded by police during an early morning operation on Sunday.

According to Sinar Harian the situation turned chaotic when some riders attempted to escape by riding against traffic to avoid arrest.

During the operation, about 800 vehicles, mostly motorcycles, were inspected, including individuals who had gathered to watch the activities.

It is understood that the location has become a hotspot for youths from across the Klang Valley to showcase heavily modified motorcycles, including those fitted with loud exhaust systems.

Kuala Lumpur Traffic Investigation and Enforcement Department (JSPT) chief Assistant Commissioner Mohd Zamzuri Mohd Isa (pic) said the integrated operation was carried out under Op Mabuk, Op Motosikal, Op Tutup and Op Samseng Jalanan, beginning at 10pm on Saturday.

“A total of 750 motorcycles and 80 cars were inspected, with 751 summonses issued for various offences, while 98 motorcycles were seized.

“From the inspections conducted, two individuals were detained after testing positive for methamphetamine, while another two were arrested for driving under the influence of alcohol. Some are still undergoing a second breathalyser test,” he said at a press conference on Sunday.

He said the operation was conducted following numerous public complaints regarding illegal street racing activities, particularly along Jalan Tun Razak.

“The area continues to be a hotspot for illegal racing despite frequent enforcement operations, due to its proximity to hospitals and residential areas.

“We will continue to carry out operations daily to curb this activity, which clearly disrupts public order,” he said.

Zamzuri added that among the offences detected were illegal motorcycle modifications and the absence of proper braking systems. One arrest was also made under Section 108 of the Road Transport Act 1987 for altering a vehicle registration number.

“Out of approximately 800 motorcycles inspected, about 350 summonses have been issued so far. The same trend continues…no brakes, modified exhausts so loud that the entire city can hear them when applied,” he said.

The Road Transport Department (JPJ) also issued 59 summonses, while the National Anti-Drugs Agency (AADK) detained two individuals who tested positive for drug use.
