NGO fund scandal: MACC confirms RM230m case not involving zakat funds

MACC confirms RM230 million NGO misappropriation case involves public donations, not zakat funds, with two suspects remanded for four days

KUALA LUMPUR: The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) has confirmed that a misappropriation case involving about RM230 million linked to a non-governmental organisation (NGO) involved public donations, not zakat funds.

MACC chief commissioner Tan Sri Azam Baki said investigations found the NGO received contributions from various sources, including commissions from certain collections, intended for those in need.

“The funds did not reach their intended beneficiaries. Instead, some individuals allegedly diverted the money for personal use, including the purchase of luxury assets,” he said in a statement.

Azam added that investigations are ongoing, with the MACC expanding the scope of the probe to ensure transparency and accountability throughout the process, in line with principles of integrity and good governance.

Earlier, two men, including an NGO deputy chairman in their 50s and 60s, were remanded for four days until April 25 to assist in the investigation.

The remand order was issued by Magistrate Ameera Mastura Khamis following an application by the MACC at the Shah Alam Magistrate’s Court.

Both suspects were arrested on suspicion of misappropriating about RM230 million in NGO funds.
