Zamri Vinoth, Tamim Dahri flee to Thailand – Police

Police confirm independent preacher Zamri Vinoth and activist Tamim Dahri have fled to Thailand while facing separate investigations for alleged offences.

KUALA LUMPUR: Police have confirmed that independent preacher Zamri Vinoth and activist Tamim Dahri, subjects of separate investigations, have fled to Thailand.

Inspector-General of Police Datuk Seri Mohd Khalid Ismail said efforts to locate the two are ongoing with assistance from Thai authorities.

The investigation into Zamri over remarks made at a rally on February 7 has been referred to the Attorney General’s Chambers.

Charges are being framed under Section 505(b) of the Penal Code for statements likely to cause public alarm.

A separate probe into Zamri for allegedly insulting the Indian community has been referred to the Penang prosecution office.

This case involves potential charges under Section 4(1) of the Sedition Act.

Meanwhile, Tamim’s case involves the alleged destruction of a sacred Hindu ‘soolam’ at an old Langkawi temple.

This investigation has been referred to the Kedah prosecution office for charges under Section 295 of the Penal Code.

“Charges will be filed once both individuals are traced and brought home,” Mohd Khalid said in a statement.

He added that police remain committed and will not tolerate any threats to public order or safety.
