Immigration checks during festive periods remain ongoing, with authorities stressing professionalism and respect for cultural sensitivities.
PETALING JAYA: Immigration enforcement operations against foreign nationals continue uninterrupted during the festive season, but are carried out with tact and professionalism to minimise discomfort, says Datuk Zakaria Shaaban.
The Director-General of the Malaysian Immigration Department stressed that enforcement activities are conducted consistently throughout the year, including during major celebrations such as Hari Raya, to ensure continued compliance with the country’s immigration laws.
“At the same time, we remain mindful of the sensitivities of foreign nationals celebrating festive occasions far from their families. All inspections are conducted in a controlled, prudent and professional manner,” he said in a statement.
Zakaria said this balanced approach is aimed not only at upholding the law but also at reducing anxiety and inconvenience among the public, particularly in high-traffic locations.

He also shared that the Malaysian Immigration Department (JIM) carried out a total of 45 immigration inspection and monitoring operations nationwide under “Ops Pantau” between March 20 and 24, 2026.
These operations, said Zakaria, involved the inspection of 3,826 foreign nationals at pre-identified locations to verify the validity of their immigration status and travel documents.
He explained that all enforcement activities are strategically planned and executed to ensure they are orderly, controlled, and carried out with integrity.
“Enforcement officers on the ground are constantly reminded to adhere strictly to discipline and the established Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), while also respecting local cultural sensitivities and social norms in the course of their duties.”
Zakaria emphasised that immigration enforcement is not confined to any particular season, as violations of the law can occur at any time. However, from a tactical standpoint, certain periods — including festive seasons — may enhance the effectiveness of detection efforts due to identifiable movement patterns and concentrations of individuals in specific areas.
“Nonetheless, all actions are based on intelligence and enforcement requirements, not merely on timing.”
The department remains committed to striking a balance between firm enforcement of immigration laws and maintaining social harmony within the community, with Zakaria reiterating that every operation is guided by the principles of professionalism, integrity, and accountability.
“This is in line with our responsibility to safeguard national security and sovereignty, while upholding the values and aspirations of Malaysia Madani.”
