The inter-monsoon phase starts this Sunday, bringing thunderstorms, heavy rain and strong winds to most parts of Malaysia until May.
KUALA LUMPUR: THE Monsoon Transition Phase is expected to begin this Sunday and continue until May. This period will bring thunderstorms and heavy rains accompanied by strong winds to most areas in short spells.
Malaysian Meteorological Department director-general Dr Mohd Hisham Mohd Anip identified the areas expected to be most affected. These are the west and interior of Peninsular Malaysia, south and central Sarawak and western Sabah.
The phase marks the end of the 2025/2026 Northeast Monsoon which began on Nov 13 last year. During this transition, the country will receive weak winds from various directions.
“This condition usually leads to heavy rains accompanied by strong winds in a short period of time, especially in the evening and early night,” Mohd Hisham said. These winds can encourage the formation of thunderstorm clouds.
The weather phenomenon also has the potential to generate tornadoes and produce hailstones. It can cause flash floods, landslides, water surges, fallen trees, lightning strikes and damage to unstable structures.
The public is advised to take shelter inside houses or buildings during such events. They should stay away from open areas, water reservoirs, and tall structures like trees, towers, and electrical conductors.
