Iran’s strait reopening a positive step for supply security

Economy Minister Akmal Nasrullah says Iran’s commitment to reopen the Strait of Hormuz is positive, with supply security remaining a top priority.

KUALA LUMPUR: Economy Minister Akmal Nasrullah Mohd Nasir described Iran’s commitment to keep the strategic Strait of Hormuz open as a positive step.

He said his ministry is continuously monitoring the situation, including Iran’s commitment to reopen the strait during the agreed ceasefire period.

“At present, we view positively the commitment to reopen the Strait of Hormuz, as we know there is a supply issue,” he told reporters after launching the National Investment Programme. He noted that markets have rallied on the development but acknowledged the situation remains uncertain with continuous volatility.

“The market is still volatile, with uncertainty and up and down movements,” he said. Akmal Nasrullah assured that the Economy Ministry will assess the overall impact on the nation’s economy.

He emphasised ensuring the highest level of preparedness, particularly regarding supply security. “Ensuring access to supplies is certainly the top priority, as well as making sure economic activities continue as expected,” he added.

The statement follows Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi’s declaration of the strait’s full reopening to all commercial vessels for the remaining ceasefire period. This move aligns with a ceasefire in Lebanon announced earlier by United States President Donald Trump.
