LEKAS to activate smart lane system to ease peak hour congestion

LEKAS Highway will activate a Smart Lane system from Wednesday to tackle peak hour congestion by temporarily opening emergency lanes.

KUALA LUMPUR: LEKAS Highway will activate a new Smart Lane system from Wednesday to tackle peak hour congestion.

The system will temporarily open emergency lanes as additional traffic lanes during morning and evening rush hours.

The northbound section runs from KM 1.0 to KM 0.1 between the Kajang Selatan and Kajang Perdana interchanges.

The southbound section runs from KM 0.0 to KM 0.4 between the Kajang Perdana and Kajang Selatan interchanges.

The implementation has received approval from the Malaysian Highway Authority and the Royal Malaysia Police.

LEKAS said the goal is to ensure smoother traffic flow and enhance road safety in congestion-prone areas.

The system optimises existing road space by enabling temporary use of the emergency lane.

This is intended to increase overall traffic capacity and flow during operational hours.

Various safety measures will be in place, including traffic cones, blinkers and advisory signage.

The routes will also feature ‘Smart Lane Start’ and ‘Smart Lane End’ signs.

Green LED indicators will light up when the lane is open for use.

The emergency lane will revert to its original function outside of the designated operating hours.

LEKAS chief operating officer Chuah Lay Hoon said the initiative reflects a commitment to proactively managing traffic flow.

“With the temporary use of emergency lanes, as well as improved signage, we aim to increase road capacity, reduce weaving movements and improve traffic flow at critical intersection areas,” she said.
