Malaysia-Cambodia trade surges 49% in first quarter

Bilateral trade between Malaysia and Cambodia jumped nearly 50% in the first quarter, driven by strong Malaysian exports of electronics and consumer goods

PHNOM PENH: Bilateral trade between Malaysia and Cambodia rose 49.4 per cent in the first quarter of this year, driven by Malaysian exports totalling RM1.5 billion (US$373 million).

Cambodia’s exports to Malaysia also showed growth, with a recent report from Cambodia’s General Department of Customs and Excise estimating shipments at RM218 million (US$55 million) between January and March.

“The increase demonstrates sustained demand and reinforces confidence from international buyers, ensuring the stability of supply chains and value chains,” said Commerce Ministry spokesperson Penn Sovicheat, as reported by Kampuchea Thmey Daily.

Malaysia now ranks as Cambodia’s seventh-largest trading partner among 20 countries listed by the department.

Traditionally, Malaysia exports electronic devices, petroleum products, auto spare parts, fast-moving consumer goods, and food and beverages, which are in high demand in the growing middle-class of Cambodia’s 17 million population. Conversely, export-driven Cambodia ships textiles, garments, milled rice, and footwear to Malaysia.
