Malaysia must proactively ensure the Strait of Malacca remains free from geopolitical tensions to protect its vital role in global trade and energy flows.
KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia must play a more proactive role in ensuring the Strait of Malacca remains free from geopolitical confrontation. Its importance as one of the world’s most critical global trade and energy routes makes this imperative.
Senior lecturer Dr Izyan Munirah Muhammad Zaidin from Universiti Malaysia Terengganu highlighted the strait’s immense significance. She stated it is one of the busiest shipping routes globally.
As of early 2026, it remains the primary chokepoint for global oil and container trade. It handles approximately 23.2 million barrels of oil per day, contributing around 29% of global maritime oil flow.
This route also manages about 40% of global trade. A significant portion involves oil flow from the Middle East to major Asian economies like China, Japan and South Korea.
“The Strait of Malacca must continue to be preserved as a safe, open and stable route for international navigation,” she emphasised. This is crucial for supporting the continuity of global trade and energy flows.
Izyan Munirah also noted that prolonged geopolitical conflict creates opportunities. She said it allows the country to accelerate its green energy transition agenda.
The government has taken early steps through the National Energy Transition Roadmap (NETR). This roadmap is now entering its second phase involving policy implementation and enforcement.
“The main goal for NETR is net zero by 2050, and when this incident occurs, it is actually an opportunity to accelerate the implementation of this policy,” she said.
The country’s maritime sector is increasingly ready for a green transition through “green shipping” initiatives. These include using alternative energy, digitalisation and electrification at major ports like Port of Tanjung Pelepas and Port Klang.
“This conflict needs to be viewed from a positive angle, where it becomes a catalyst for change towards alternative or green energy,” she added.
