Man feared drowned during alleged cable theft at dam

Search continues for a man feared drowned at a Tenaga Nasional substation, believed to be involved in cable theft with an accomplice who was rescued and detained.

IPOH: A man is feared to have drowned at a Tenaga Nasional Berhad substation located at the Sultan Azlan Shah Dam in Ulu Kinta.

The 32-year-old is believed to have been involved in an alleged cable theft with an accomplice yesterday.

Ipoh district police chief ACP Abang Zainal Abidin Abang Ahmad said police first received a report of cable theft in the area around 12.40 am.

A second report was received just 10 minutes later stating a man was feared drowned near the same location.

“The man who drowned is believed to have been involved in cable theft with another suspect,” Abang Zainal said.

He confirmed the accomplice also ended up in the water but was rescued after becoming trapped on the dam embankment.

That suspect has since been detained to assist in the investigation.

“The area is classified as high risk,” Abang Zainal added.

He stated the Fire and Rescue Department is continuing search and rescue operations for the missing man.

Perak assistant operations director of the Malaysian Fire and Rescue Department, Sabarodzi Nor Ahmad, said the search is using surface techniques around the reported drowning site.

Ten personnel from the Tambun Fire and Rescue Station were deployed for the operation.

They were assisted by the Water Rescue team from the Ipoh Fire and Rescue Station.
