Mohamad Asfia creates history as Malaysia’s longest-serving state assembly speaker, reappointed for a record 10th term in Sarawak.
KUCHING: Tan Sri Datuk Amar Mohamad Asfia Awang Nassar has made history as Malaysia’s longest-serving State Legislative Assembly Speaker.
The 78-year-old was reappointed during a ceremony before the Yang di-Pertua Negeri Tun Dr Wan Junaidi Tuanku Jaafar at the Sarawak State Astana.
His reappointment is effective for two years from November 16 this year until November 15, 2027.
Mohamad Asfia has held the position since November 15, 2000, making his tenure one of the most experienced in the country’s legislative history.
Sarawak Premier Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg and his deputy Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah Embas witnessed the swearing-in ceremony.
A statement from the Sarawak State Assembly said the reappointment for a 10th term reflects the state government’s confidence in his leadership and commitment.
Mohamad Asfia holds a Bachelor of Laws from Leeds University and a Barrister-at-Law qualification from Inner Temple, London.
He also possesses a postgraduate qualification in Port and Shipping Management from the University of Wales, Cardiff.
He began his career as Legal Advisor to the Sarawak Timber Industry Development Corporation from 1974 to 1976.
Mohamad Asfia practised as a lawyer from 1976 to 2000 before entering full-time legislative service.
His corporate experience includes chairing Interfinance Berhad from 1980 to 1991.
He also served as editor-in-chief of Sarawak Tribune newspaper from 1990 to 2000.
In state politics, he represented the Kuala Rajang and Serdeng/Semop constituencies.
He held the position of Deputy Speaker from 1995 to 2000 before his appointment as Speaker.
Mohamad Asfia currently serves as permanent chairman of Parti Pesaka Bumiputera Bersatu.
He also chairs the party’s Constitutional Committee.
