New Zealand to boost halal meat exports to Malaysia with upgraded agreement

New Zealand pledges to enhance safe halal meat exports to Malaysia through upgraded implementing arrangement for clearer trade rules.

KUALA LUMPUR: New Zealand has committed to increasing exports of safe and reliable halal meat products to Malaysia following an upgraded halal implementing arrangement exchange.

Prime Minister Christopher Luxon affirmed New Zealand will remain a trusted partner for Malaysia by maintaining open supply chains.

He promised transparent rules and quick issue resolution for trade matters.

“Streamlined settings, strong communication, and effective regulatory oversight are practical examples of how we will build certainty together,” Luxon stated at the Halal Diplomacy Event.

New Zealand will support this through data-driven logistics and faster clearance for trusted operators under the new Customs Mutual Recognition Arrangement.

Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi also attended the event.

Luxon said New Zealand will focus on improving halal standards and assurance through the arrangement.

The upgraded halal implementing arrangement provides clearer rules for registration, documentation, processing, labelling and storage.

New Zealand also commits to diversifying and growing its halal products through the arrangement.

It will leverage Malaysia-New Zealand trade platforms like the Malaysia International Halal Showcase in 2026 to open new markets.

Luxon anticipates greater resilience and reliability in New Zealand halal products following the arrangement.

Luxon and Ahmad Zahid witnessed the halal implementing arrangement exchange earlier today.

Department of Islamic Development Malaysia Director-General Datuk Dr Sirajuddin Suhaimee and New Zealand High Commissioner Mike Walsh conducted the exchange.

Both countries announced a commitment in September 2024 to increase bilateral trade by 50% by 2030. – Bernama
