200 Malaysian Armed Forces veterans to join border agency from 2026

About 200 MAF veterans will join the Malaysian Border Control and Protection Agency (AKPS) starting in the first quarter of 2026.

PUTRAJAYA: About 200 veterans of the Malaysian Armed Forces (MAF) are expected to join the Malaysian Border Control and Protection Agency (AKPS) starting in the first quarter of 2026.

Home Minister Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail said positions for the veterans have been approved by the Public Service Department (JPA).

He stated the recruitment process will be carried out in the near future.

“They (MAF veterans) have certain skills, ideally we hope we can complete the exercise in the first quarter,” he said at a press conference.

Saifuddin Nasution said this approach differs from recruiting fresh graduates or personnel from other agencies.

The recruitment will involve former Army, Royal Malaysian Navy and Royal Malaysian Air Force personnel.

“They are a unique asset… which will help in terms of AKPS human resources,” he added.

He noted the veterans will start with a minimum age of 38 years.

“Our target is for them to still be fit and energetic,” the minister said.

AKPS director-general Datuk Seri Mohd Shuhaily Mohd Zain had previously said the agency would recruit 220 veterans in stages.

The initiative was announced under Budget 2026 and will use a contract-based appointment method.

Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim announced priority for MAF veterans to fill AKPS manpower needs during the budget presentation.

This move aims to get the border agency into full operational readiness.
