AirBorneo to launch jet services from Kuching in July

AirBorneo plans July launch for Boeing 737 flights from Kuching to KL, Singapore and Kota Kinabalu, marking its expansion into regional jet operations.

KUCHING: AirBorneo is targeting a July launch for regional jet operations from Kuching using three Boeing 737-800 aircraft. The airline plans initial services to Kuala Lumpur, Singapore and Kota Kinabalu.

Chief executive officer Megat Ardian Wira Mohd Aminuddin said the aircraft will be introduced through a wet-lease arrangement. The move follows the airline’s takeover of MASwings operations earlier this year.

“We are targeting to commence jet operations in July, with Kuching serving as the main hub for our jet aircraft,” he told reporters at an iftar event. The jet services represent the next phase of growth for the carrier.

Kota Kinabalu and Miri will remain as turboprop hubs for rural and regional connectivity. The new jet operations aim to enhance connectivity and provide more travel options for passengers travelling to and from Sarawak.

AirBorneo is working with the Civil Aviation Authority of Malaysia to secure route approvals and airport slots. Preparations in network planning and commercial operations are also underway for a smooth launch.

The airline aims to gradually expand its network three months after operations stabilise. It plans to serve up to three domestic and three international destinations by the end of 2026, subject to approvals.
