Igan MP urges immediate electrical wiring audit in schools after a student electrocution death in Daro, Sarawak
SIBU: Igan Member of Parliament Ahmad Johnie Zawawi has urged the Ministry of Education (MOE) to immediately conduct a comprehensive electrical wiring audit in all schools following an electrocution incident in Daro yesterday that claimed the life of a student.
He said monitoring the safety level of school facilities was crucial, particularly in dilapidated schools across Sarawak.
“This case of death due to electrocution is linked to the issue of dilapidated schools in Sarawak, which involves not only ageing building structures but also inadequate facilities.
“MOE must ensure that the electrical wiring systems in schools are always safe. I urge that appropriate action be taken, considering that some electrical wiring systems in schools are more than 15 years old,” he said in a statement today.
Ahmad Johnie stressed that the audit was important not only to prevent electrocution incidents but also to reduce the risk of fires caused by electrical short circuits.
He added that he intends to raise the issue of school facility safety during the next Dewan Rakyat sitting.
Earlier, Matu Daro police chief DSP Rahim Mihos was reported as saying that a Form Four student died while a Form Three student was seriously injured after they were believed to have been electrocuted while performing ablution at a secondary school in Daro, within the Mukah Division, yesterday.
The injured Form Three student was initially rushed to Daro Hospital before being transferred to the intensive care unit at Sibu Hospital for further treatment.
Meanwhile, the Sarawak Education Department (JPN) has launched an internal investigation to assess the school’s compliance with safety standards.
