Transport Minister Anthony Loke calls for a contingency plan and study after flash floods hit the PLUS highway, disrupting traffic and posing safety risks.
SEREMBAN: Transport Minister Anthony Loke has called for a contingency plan and comprehensive study following flash floods on the North-South Expressway (PLUS). He said the incident, which caused significant traffic congestion, highlights the need for immediate action from the highway operator.
Loke stated that infrastructure must be able to cope with changing weather patterns and surrounding development. He believes the Malaysian Highway Authority (LLM) and PLUS will take further action on the matter.
The minister noted that new projects are being explored and developed along parts of the highway. He said developers and contractors must take responsibility if such projects are the cause of the flash floods.
Loke emphasised that flooding on highways disrupts road users and poses serious safety risks. Continuous heavy rain yesterday caused flash floods at the Nilai Rest and Service Area (R&R).
Water overflowed into the dining areas of premises at the rest stop. Videos on social media showed brown-coloured water rapidly inundating parts of the dining area, pedestrian walkways and nearby parking spaces.
