Flood victims in Sabah surge past 3,400 as rains continue

The number of flood evacuees in Sabah has risen to over 3,400 people, with Pitas district worst-hit as thunderstorms are forecast for the state’s interior.

KOTA KINABALU: The number of flood victims in Sabah has continued to climb, reaching 3,427 people from 1,449 families as of 8 pm tonight.

This represents an increase from the 3,266 people from 1,401 families recorded at 4 pm earlier in the day, according to a statement from the State Disaster Management Committee (JPBN) Secretariat.

All evacuees from the three affected districts of Pitas, Paitan and Tawau are now housed in 27 temporary evacuation centres (PPS).

Pitas district remains the worst-affected area with 2,171 victims, followed by Paitan with 1,011 people and Tawau with 245 people.

The floods have impacted a total of 70 villages across the three districts, though no fatalities have been reported.

The Malaysian Meteorological Department (MetMalaysia) has forecast thunderstorms for several areas in the interior of Sabah tonight.
