Floods worsen across five states as evacuee numbers rise

Floods intensify in five states with Kelantan worst hit as evacuee numbers climb to over 11,000 by late afternoon, while river levels exceed danger marks.

KUALA LUMPUR: Flood conditions deteriorated across five states with Kelantan recording the highest number of evacuees at 9,634 people from 3,515 families by 4 pm today.

The Social Welfare Department’s Disaster Information site reported that 38 temporary relief centres have been opened across four affected districts in Kelantan.

River levels in Kelantan have exceeded alert levels, with Sungai Melor in Bachok recorded at 7.68 metres and Sungai Golok in Rantau Panjang at 7.49 metres.

Penang saw evacuee numbers increase to 404 people from 104 families sheltered across four relief centres.

Seberang Perai Utara District’s SK Lahar Yooi accommodated the most victims with 161 people, followed by Pusat Peminderan Desa Puri with 108 evacuees.

Perak recorded 1,415 flood victims from 440 families across 20 relief centres in multiple districts.

Manjung District was among the worst affected with 837 people housed in 10 relief centres, while Hilir Perak became the latest district hit by flooding.

Selangor’s evacuee count rose to 327 people from 109 families across eight relief centres in five districts.

The state opened three additional relief centres at SK Bukit Kerayong, Dewan Bakawali Section 35, and SK Binjai in Klang.

Kedah’s Kubang Pasu district became newly affected with five relief centres opened, though victim numbers are still being tallied.

Kulim district currently houses 371 people from 110 families across three relief centres.

Three rivers in Kedah have exceeded danger levels: Sungai Laka (23.47m), Sungai Sintok (45.24m), and Sungai Titi Kerbau (4.08m).

Terengganu saw a decrease in evacuees to 205 people from 77 families, all sheltered at the Kuala Besut relief centre.

The SK Pulau Perhentian relief centre was closed after all victims were allowed to return home.
