Infant’s death at hospital childcare centre ruled as asphyxiation

Police confirm a four-month-old baby’s death at a hospital childcare centre was due to asphyxiation, with two employees remanded for murder investigation.

BUKIT MERTAJAM: Police have confirmed that the death of a four-month-old baby boy at a childcare centre within the Seberang Jaya Hospital compound was due to asphyxiation.

Penang police chief Datuk Azizee Ismail (pic) said the cause was determined following a post-mortem conducted on the infant’s body.

He stated that police are completing the investigation paper before referring the case to the Deputy Public Prosecutor’s Office for further action.

Azizee said the two employees of the childcare centre have had their remand extended by another seven days until March 22.

They are assisting investigations under Section 302 of the Penal Code for murder.

The victim, Hayl Haarith Mohd Syafaeez, was pronounced dead at 4.20 am on March 9 after being rushed to the hospital’s Emergency Department.

It is understood that doctors performed cardiopulmonary resuscitation for about an hour before he was pronounced dead.

The infant had been sent to the 24-hour childcare centre by his mother, a nurse working the night shift.
