JPJ targets employers in crackdown on illegal foreign commercial drivers

The Road Transport Department is intensifying enforcement against employers who illegally hire foreign drivers for commercial vehicles, with heavier penalties under financial crime laws.

SEMENYIH: Stricter action will be taken against employers illegally hiring foreigners to drive commercial vehicles.

The concerted efforts of the Road Transport Department (JPJ), the National Anti-Financial Crime Centre (NFCC) and the Immigration Department will ensure enforcement targets company owners and management.

JPJ senior enforcement director Datuk Muhammad Kifli Ma Hassan said the action follows an increase in cases of local employers hiring foreign drivers without valid licences.

“In the Ops Pemandu Warga Asing (PEWA) carried out today, a total of 11 lorries were impounded and found to be operated by foreign drivers employed by local companies,” he said.

He said most of the foreign drivers involved lack a Competent Driving Licence, a Vocational Licence, or a Public Service Vehicle permit.

These drivers have not been tested or trained to operate goods vehicles.

Muhammad Kifli said cooperation with NFCC enables action against employers under broader provisions, including the Anti-Money Laundering Act.

This allows for heavier penalties for those who illegally hire foreign drivers.

He added that JPJ has identified several factories employing many illegal foreign drivers, with action to be taken soon.
