Kampung Pasir flood caused by damaged Sungai Skudai flap gate

Flooding in Kampung Pasir resulted from a damaged Sungai Skudai flap gate during high tide, affecting over 100 houses with recurring issues since 1970s.

KAMPUNG PASIR: Flooding that inundated this village yesterday resulted from a damaged flap gate along Sungai Skudai during high tide conditions.

Johor Works, Transport, Infrastructure and Communications Committee chairman Mohamad Fazli Mohamad Salleh confirmed the gate malfunction allowed river water to enter the village’s borrow pit.

“We received reports that the flap gate failed to function during high tide, and repairs have been done immediately to reduce the risk of flooding,” he said when contacted.

He estimated approximately 25 houses were affected with no relief centre activated yet.

The Johor Department of Irrigation and Drainage continues monitoring Sungai Skudai’s water levels.

The state government is implementing phase 1 of the Environmentally-Friendly Drainage Project in Kampung Pasir as a long-term flood mitigation solution.

This RM project is scheduled for completion in June 2026.

Kampung Pasir village chief Azmi Misni reported more than 100 houses were actually affected by the flooding.

Bernama checks found most houses along Jalan Manggis and Jalan Sukun were inundated by knee-high floodwaters.

Resident Junita Mazlan, 26, said flooding began around noon yesterday with river water rising swiftly to thigh level.

Waters receded slightly in the evening before rising again at night according to her account.

Noraini Kasim, 38, shared that floodwaters entered her bedrooms and kitchen, damaging electrical appliances.

She explained they lacked sufficient time to save their belongings from the rapidly rising waters.

Zamir Abdullah, 44, expressed concern about recurring village disappointment with flooding incidents.

He noted flooding has been a persistent problem since the 1970s despite previous mitigation measures.

Bunds were built and pumps installed historically but flooding continues to affect the community. – Bernama

Wang shines with stunning 64 as Moutai Singapore Open makes its return

Korea’s Jeunghun Wang made a statement return as he fired an eight-under-par 64 to seize the opening-day lead at the Moutai Singapore Open, marking the event’s comeback after a two-year absence. The 30-year-old carded nine birdies and a lone bogey at the Singapore Island Country Club (SICC) — hosting the tournament for the first time in 25 years. Wang, who last lifted a title almost eight years ago, said he’s eager to end his drought after a strong all-round display, especially with his “hot putting” and “solid ball-striking.” He leads by one shot ahead of Thailand’s Kiradech Aphibarnrat and Gunn Charoenkul, as well as Kieran Vincent from Zimbabwe, all tied at 65.
