MACC chief Azam Baki says investigations into several major cases, including army procurement and a former minister, are nearing completion with a focus on fund flows.
PUTRAJAYA: The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission will soon complete investigation papers for several high-profile cases.
Chief commissioner Tan Sri Azam Baki said investigating officers have been instructed to intensify probes by tracing and linking fund flows to underlying motives.
“If we say someone accepted a bribe, who gave it? If the money is found in an account, who transferred it? These are the elements I want my officers to establish,” he said on the Sembang Tamu podcast.
He added the commission is moving towards finalising the papers for the cases he referenced in the near future.
Current high-profile investigations include a corruption case involving army procurement that implicates several senior officers.
The MACC is also probing a former minister alleged to have received about RM5 million from a developer linked to a billboard project and land transfer in the capital.
Commenting on the army case, Azam said he will meet Defence Minister Datuk Seri Mohamed Khaled Nordin next Wednesday to discuss procurement issues at the ministry.
He stressed the procurement issues within the Ministry of Defence are broader than the current case and require comprehensive corrective measures.
“Regarding procurement issues in MINDEF, the clean-up, as mentioned by Datuk Seri Mohamed Khaled, needs to be carried out, and we must work together to achieve this,” he said.
Azam added he will provide details on the investigation’s latest status at a press conference tomorrow.
On Dec 23, MACC officers visited MINDEF to examine projects implemented through open tender and other procurement methods.
On Jan 8, a former army chief was remanded for seven days while his two wives were also remanded to assist the probe.
The commission seized gold, a high-performance SUV, foreign currency cash worth an estimated RM6.9 million, and 23 Rolex watches valued at about RM2 million.
Today, the MACC detained another high-ranking officer of the Malaysian Armed Forces to assist in the investigation.
