Malaysia identifies 540 illegal border routes nationwide

Inspector-General of Police reveals 540 illegal land and sea routes exist across Malaysia, highlighting border security challenges and enforcement strategies.

KUALA LUMPUR: A total of 540 illegal routes have been identified nationwide as of February.

Inspector-General of Police Datuk Seri Mohd Khalid Ismail (pic) said they included 360 land routes and 24 maritime routes across 10 states, excluding Kuala Lumpur, Penang, Terengganu and Pahang.

“Malaysia has extensive land and maritime boundaries with Thailand, Singapore, Indonesia, Brunei and the Philippines, as well as international waters in the South China Sea and the Sulu Sea,” he said.

He added that these border areas are exploited for cross-border criminal activities, despite also serving legitimate trade and movement.

Mohd Khalid said maintaining border security poses various challenges for the Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM).

He stated that PDRM has adopted a comprehensive, integrated and phased border security strategy aligned with national security priorities.

The approach is guided by principles of early prevention, focused enforcement, regional cooperation and sustainable security management.

“To address the issue of illegal routes, PDRM has intensified land, river and maritime patrols in an integrated manner with other security agencies,” he added.

This effort includes strengthening enforcement cooperation and information sharing with foreign enforcement bodies.

Mohd Khalid said PDRM continues to maintain vigilant monitoring of border areas and tourism hotspots to safeguard visitors.

He highlighted that Malaysia has strengthened its security framework through advanced surveillance technology and enhanced intelligence sharing.

Close inter-agency cooperation, supported by international partnerships, helps respond effectively to emerging threats.

“These proactive efforts ensure that Malaysia remains a safe and welcoming destination for visitors,” he concluded.

His speech was read by Bukit Aman Special Branch deputy director SAC Shaidatul Akmar Mohd Noor at a Tourism Ministry event.
