The Traveller Scheme, offering protection for Malaysians working in Singapore, is expected to be implemented in the second quarter of this year
PUTRAJAYA: The Traveller Scheme, designed to protect Malaysians commuting to work in Singapore, is expected to be tabled at the Cabinet meeting soon for consideration.
Minister of Human Resources Datuk Seri R. Ramanan said initiatives under the scheme have entered the final phase of study.
He stated the scheme is expected to be implemented in the second quarter of this year.
“This scheme involves about 400,000 workers commuting to Singapore,” Ramanan told reporters after his ministry’s monthly assembly.
He highlighted that these commuters currently lack a formal protection scheme.
“If anything happens to them while at work or commuting, who will take care of them and their families?” he asked.
Ramanan emphasised the government’s commitment, quoting Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim’s assurance that no one will be left behind.
SOCSO Group chief executive officer Datuk Seri Dr Mohammed Azman Aziz Mohammed was also present at the event.
Mohammed Azman said SOCSO would hold discussions with stakeholders on April 6.
The discussions will take place at the Malaysian Embassy in Singapore and will include non-governmental organisations working with the travellers.
