Man found dead after restaurant slashing in Penang

A man suspected of a slashing attack at a Penang restaurant was later found dead in an apparent suicide, with police citing a financial dispute.

GEORGE TOWN: A man suspected of slashing another individual at a restaurant was found dead at a house here.

Penang Police Chief Datuk Azizee Ismail said a 58-year-old man went to the Pulau Tikus Police Station with head wounds at 6.30 am.

The victim reported being slashed by a known individual at a restaurant near Pulau Tikus Market.

He was subsequently sent to Hospital Pulau Pinang for treatment.

Acting on the victim’s information, police proceeded to a house on Solok Codrington at 8.05 am.

Upon arrival, officers found a 68-year-old man deceased in the kitchen area.

Azizee said the man is suspected to be the attacker and is believed to have taken his own life using a rope.

Further investigations led to the seizure of a machete from a rubbish bin.

The weapon was found about 50 metres from the scene of the attack in the Pulau Tikus Market area.

Post-mortem results determined the cause of death to be hanging.

The case is being investigated under Section 326 of the Penal Code for voluntarily causing grievous hurt by a dangerous weapon.

Preliminary investigations indicate the incident stemmed from financial issues between the victim and the suspect.
