Samples from a fatal Penang shophouse fire sent to lab for analysis, with results on the cause expected within two weeks.
BUTTERWORTH: The Penang branch of the Malaysian Fire and Rescue Department (JBPM) has sent several samples to the Fire Investigation Electrical Laboratory (FIvEL) to determine the cause of a fire that claimed two lives at a double-storey shophouse in Lebuh King, George Town, last Monday.
JBPM deputy director-general (Operations) Datuk Ahmad Izram Osman (pic) said investigations are ongoing, including forensic analysis of evidence collected at the scene.
He said cases involving possible electrical causes are referred to the FIvEL in Shah Alam, Selangor, which specialises in analysing fires linked to wiring systems and electrical equipment.
“We need precise confirmation before announcing any cause, as this also involves other agencies such as the Energy Commission and Tenaga Nasional Berhad,” he said, adding that results are expected within a week to a maximum of 14 days.
The Monday afternoon blaze claimed the lives of veteran lawyer San Markan Ganapathi, 88, and clerk B. J. Chandra, 60.
Meanwhile, Ahmad Izram also urged building owners, particularly those with heritage or pre-independence structures in Penang, to reassess fire safety measures.
He noted that many older buildings were not constructed in accordance with the Uniform Building By-Laws 1984 and often feature wooden structures and ageing wiring systems that pose higher risks.
“I have asked the Penang JBPM director to engage with heritage building owners’ associations to address this issue. At the same time, we will conduct periodic inspections to ensure compliance with safety standards,” he said.
Ahmad Izram was met after the Penang JBPM Excellent Service Awards ceremony, where 67 officers and personnel were honoured.
Also present was Penang JBPM director Mohamad Shoki Hamzah.
