The 300MW floating solar farm in Bestari Jaya will power the national grid for 21 years, using advanced technology to protect water quality.
BESTARI JAYA: Selangor has launched the construction of one of Southeast Asia’s largest floating solar farms. The RM1 billion Large-Scale Solar (LSS 5) project in Bestari Jaya will have a generation capacity of 300 megawatts.
Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Amirudin Shari said the project was awarded to a consortium led by Edra Power Holdings Sdn Bhd. The consortium, Bestari Solar Sdn Bhd, also includes Worldwide Holdings Berhad and Rotaka Engineering Services.
The project will cover approximately 430 hectares on state-owned land. The land will be leased to the involved companies for solar energy operations over a 21-year period.
Amirudin confirmed the Power Purchase Agreement was signed in March 2025. Project completion is expected by July 2027, ensuring a stable renewable energy supply to the national grid.
More than 80% of the project will utilise floating solar technology on existing water bodies. The remaining development will be on land, minimising large-scale land use.
The water bodies involved are raw water storage ponds linked to systems like the Hybrid Off River Augmentation Storage. Amirudin assured the project uses the latest technology to protect water quality.
He stated the technology incorporates oxygenation and algae growth control measures. This ensures the solar farm will not adversely affect the water.
Beyond energy generation, the project is expected to deliver significant economic benefits for Selangor. It aims to attract further investment and support industrial and commercial activities.
The development will also encourage the redevelopment of former mining land. Amirudin said it will create opportunities for local companies and strengthen domestic capabilities across the renewable energy value chain.
