TTDI wall collapse: JKR to probe cause and assess structural integrity

Works Minister Alexander Nanta orders a detailed technical investigation into the TTDI retaining wall collapse and immediate safety measures

KUALA LUMPUR: The Public Works Department (JKR) has been instructed to conduct a detailed technical investigation into the collapse of a retaining wall in Taman Tun Dr Ismail.

Works Minister Datuk Seri Alexander Nanta Linggi said JKR must determine the actual cause of the flooding incident that led to the failure.

He also directed the department to assess the structural integrity of the affected area and recommend additional mitigation measures.

“The Ministry of Works will not compromise on matters involving public safety,” Nanta said in a Facebook post.

Immediate action at the site has included clearing debris and removing damaged hoarding along Jalan Abang Haji Openg.

Authorities have also installed about 200 metres of concrete barriers with geotextile and carried out desilting works.

Nanta said these measures are crucial to stabilise the situation and reduce subsequent risks.

Preliminary reports indicate heavy rain between 3.30 pm and 5.30 pm caused water to overflow from a nearby construction site.

Initial observations show water from the hillside caused an earth bund to rupture, flowing into a silt trap.

The public drainage system downstream was unable to effectively accommodate the flow due to utility obstructions.

This led to water ponding and overflow onto the public road, exerting pressure on the existing retaining wall.

Nanta urged all parties involved in the project to extend full cooperation to the authorities.

He said the ministry will monitor developments and ensure follow-up actions are taken transparently.

“I extend my sympathies to the affected residents,” he added.

Nanta assured them that recovery and preventive measures will be implemented as quickly as possible.
