PERKESO urges platform providers to comply with Gig Workers Act

PERKESO urges platform providers to comply with the Gig Workers Act 2025 or face stricter enforcement measures.

KUALA LUMPUR: The Social Security Organisation (PERKESO) has urged platform providers to promptly align their systems and submit details of their workers to comply with the Gig Workers Act 2025 (Act 872).

In a statement today, PERKESO said the call comes as the current onboarding process has only covered about two per cent of the estimated 1.2 million gig workers in Malaysia, despite its digital infrastructure being fully ready.

It said the move is not merely a regulatory requirement, but a critical step to ensure consistent and continuous social protection for gig workers.

“Gig workers are constantly exposed to risks while earning a living. Any delay in system integration could affect income continuity in the event of work-related incidents,” the statement read.

PERKESO also acknowledged concerns raised by the Malaysian E-hailing Coalition (GEM) regarding compliance with the Act, and said it is prepared to adopt stricter enforcement measures if platform providers fail to meet the requirements.

It stressed that platform providers must ensure social security protection for gig workers, as it is a fundamental right that supports the sustainability of the industry.

“Social security protection is not merely a legal obligation, but a responsibility to safeguard the welfare of workers who contribute to the nation’s economy,” PERKESO added.
