Petronas and Terengganu state will explore nature-based carbon projects to generate credits and support Malaysia’s climate goals.
KUALA LUMPUR: Petroliam Nasional Bhd (Petronas) and the Terengganu state government have signed a memorandum of understanding to explore nature-based solutions projects.
The collaboration, formalised with the Terengganu Economic Planning Unit, will identify potential sites for certified nature-based carbon initiatives.
These projects aim to generate high-quality carbon credits while delivering benefits to local communities and supporting conservation.
Nature-based solutions involve actions to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by protecting and restoring natural ecosystems.
Petronas stated the carbon credits are integral for addressing residual emissions in its ‘Net Zero Carbon Emissions by 2050 Pathway’.
The MoU was signed by Petronas senior general manager Giulia Sartori and Terengganu state secretary Datuk Mohd Azmi Mohamad Daham.
Sartori said the company looks forward to advancing climate-positive initiatives that create shared value.
“We are pleased to collaborate with the state of Terengganu in advancing nature-based solutions that strengthen climate resilience, enhance biodiversity and deliver meaningful benefits to local communities,” she said.
Mohd Azmi highlighted the significant potential of the state’s diverse natural ecosystems.
“Through this collaboration with Petronas, we aim to contribute to Malaysia’s efforts to reduce carbon emissions while ensuring environmental conservation brings lasting benefits to the people of Terengganu,” he added.
