Meeting with Zahid likely today as Negeri Sembilan crisis deepens – Anwar

Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim signals a possible meeting with Zahid Hamidi today amid the Negeri Sembilan political turmoil, urging caution against assumptions.

KUALA LUMPUR: Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has indicated that a meeting with Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi may take place today, following a visit to the palace after his attendance at an event in TRX yesterday.

Addressing the mounting speculation surrounding the Negeri Sembilan leadership crisis, Anwar cautioned against political conjecture, asserting that decisions must not be based on assumptions within a stable governing framework.

“There is no place for assumptions in politics in this context,” Anwar, who is also the PKR president told reporters today.

He also dismissed any suggestions of a state assembly dissolution, stating that the matter has not arisen.

“At this point, there is no issue of dissolution. Based on my discussions and the advice of His Royal Highness, the instruction is to proceed as usual while other processes are carried out in accordance with the law,” he said.

The crisis reached a tipping point yesterday after media reports confirmed that 14 Barisan Nasional (BN) assemblymen had withdrawn their support for Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Aminuddin Harun, throwing the stability of the state government into question.

Perikatan Nasional (PN), which currently holds five seats, has since indicated its openness to collaborating with BN.

Such a move would significantly shift the balance of power in the 36-seat assembly, where Pakatan Harapan (PH) currently holds 17 seats—two short of a simple majority.

Umno President Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi stated that the move by the BN assemblymen was made independently.

He stated that the party leadership is currently reviewing the implications of the withdrawal before deciding on the next course of action.
