Mohd Kurniawan Naim sworn in as Kinabatangan MP

New Kinabatangan MP Mohd Kurniawan Naim takes oath in Parliament, succeeding his late father and pledging service with an increased by-election majority.

KUALA LUMPUR: Newly elected Kinabatangan MP Mohd Kurniawan Naim Moktar was sworn in as a member of the Dewan Rakyat today.

The ceremony before Dewan Rakyat Speaker Tan Sri Johari Abdul preceded the Ministers’ Question Time session.

Mohd Kurniawan Naim won the Kinabatangan parliamentary by-election on Saturday with a majority of 14,214 votes.

He defeated Warisan’s Datuk Saddi Abdul Rahman and independent candidate Goldam Hamid in a three-cornered contest.

The by-election was called following the death of the incumbent, Datuk Seri Bung Moktar Radin, on December 5 last year.

Bung Moktar was also Mohd Kurniawan Naim’s father.

In his proclamation speech, Johari expressed hope the new MP would provide the best service to his constituents.

He also urged him to play a constructive role in the Dewan Rakyat for the benefit of the people and nation.

“I hope the Honourable Member will continue the legacy and contributions of his late father by making meaningful contributions, and that he will serve with excellence and dedication,” Johari said.

Mohd Kurniawan Naim later posed his first question in the Dewan Rakyat to Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim.

His question during Ministers’ Question Time focused on attracting investment into rural areas, including the Kinabatangan constituency.
