Sabah’s interim action plan for Sepanggar port includes temporary storage, revised tariffs, and a trailer park to ease congestion ahead of a major expansion.
KOTA KINABALU: The Sabah Ministry of Industrial Development, Entrepreneurship and Transportation has coordinated an Interim Action Plan to address severe congestion at the Teluk Sapangar Container Port.
Deputy Chief Minister III Datuk Ewon Benedick said this temporary plan is a mitigation measure pending the completion of a major port expansion project.
The cabinet-approved plan focuses on optimising existing capacity and enforcing port operational regulations. It aims to ensure more efficient container flow management.
A key step is the creation of additional temporary container storage to increase capacity and reduce congestion in the port area. This facility is expected to commence operations by the end of March.
Revised container storage tariff rates will also be implemented to encourage faster container clearance. This is designed to reduce congestion in container storage areas.
To support logistics, a trailer parking site at the Kota Kinabalu Industrial Park has been identified for use. This initiative aims to reduce congestion and streamline the movement of trailers.
All involved transportation companies will be required to fully utilise the Vehicle Booking System. This system will arrange vehicle movements in a more planned and controlled manner.
Ewon said the implementation of this interim plan is crucial for immediate operational needs. He stated it will have a direct impact on reducing congestion.
The ministry is confident these measures can maintain the port’s competitiveness and ensure supply chain continuity. They are intended to preserve the confidence of industry players and investors.
