Sarawak fire department on full alert for monsoon floods

Sarawak Fire and Rescue Department mobilises 383 personnel and 141 auxiliary firefighters for Northeast Monsoon flood preparedness.

KUCHING: The Sarawak Fire and Rescue Department has activated full alert status for the Northeast Monsoon with extensive personnel mobilisation.

More than 383 regular personnel and 141 auxiliary firefighters are now on standby for potential flooding across the state.

Director Jamri Masran confirmed the Rapid Response Team has been activated to guide all personnel in maintaining maximum preparedness.

“We want every station, every unit and every firefighter to fully understand their respective roles, follow the correct procedures, and be ready to act swiftly when required,” he said.

“In the MTL context, time is a critical factor, as even a second’s delay can have a significant impact on saving lives,” Jamri emphasised during the monsoon preparedness programme launch.

The department has received 17 boats to strengthen flood response capabilities in vulnerable areas.

This equipment will facilitate early-stage rescue operations by local communities in moving flood victims to safer locations.

JBPM will also supply tents and chainsaws to three volunteer fire brigades in Kampung Buntal, Bako Indah and PBS Bunan Gega.

Kuching South Mayor Datuk Wee Hong Seng expressed confidence in the department’s monsoon readiness.

“We are aware of the challenges ahead, floods, landslides, strong winds and other risks that threaten lives and property,” he said.

“However, I am confident that with JBPM’s meticulous planning, intensive training and high commitment, we will be able to respond more effectively, reduce risks and protect the people,” Wee added.
