Universiti Malaya launches internal probe after social media claims link lecturer to Freemasonry
PETALING JAYA: Universiti Malaya (UM) has launched an internal investigation following social media allegations that a senior lecturer at the institution is linked to the Freemason movement.
In a statement, UM confirmed it is aware of the claims and has initiated a probe to gain a full understanding of the matter. The university assured that the investigation will be conducted fairly, transparently, and in accordance with laws, regulations, and university procedures.
“The public is advised to allow the investigation process to proceed without interference and to avoid speculation or spreading unverified information, in order to protect the integrity of the investigation and the privacy of all parties involved,” UM said.
The university reiterated its commitment to handling the issue professionally, ethically, and responsibly, in line with good governance principles.
Social media posts alleged that the lecturer and his wife were connected to a Freemason branch abroad, questioning UM’s decision to appoint him.
Freemasonry is a centuries-old fraternal organisation that originated in Europe between the 16th and 18th centuries, known for its closed meetings, rituals, and emphasis on moral values and charitable work.
