Malaysia’s balanced West Asia stance wins US, Iran approval

Malaysia’s impartial diplomatic stance on the West Asian conflict has been positively received by both Iran and the US, ensuring national interests are protected.

KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia’s balanced diplomatic position regarding the conflict in West Asia has been well received by most nations, including Iran and the United States.

Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi stated the country’s stance is also respected by Gulf Cooperation Council member countries.

He explained that Malaysia’s position is firmly based on the principles of international law and peace. The stance explicitly states that actions by Israel and the US contravene United Nations resolutions and violate international law.

“Although at the initial stage the GCC countries were quite worried about the stance, they are now clear that Malaysia’s stance is good,” he said during a keynote address.

Ahmad Zahid said Malaysia continues to strengthen diplomatic ties with Gulf nations, the US, and Iran despite challenging geopolitical developments. He emphasised that relations with Gulf countries remain cordial.

Malaysia also maintains its diplomatic and economic relations with the United States. The nation simultaneously continues its good relations with Iran.

This balanced approach has yielded practical benefits for Malaysia’s energy security. Ahmad Zahid highlighted the recent release of several Malaysian oil tankers that were blocked in the Strait of Hormuz.

“What is the result of our good relations with Iran? There are seven oil tankers that were unable to pass through the Strait of Hormuz but thank God they have been released,” he stated.

He confirmed that although not all vessels have been freed, crucial oil supplies have now been delivered to Malaysia. The government hopes all seven ships will be released soon if the blockade is lifted.

Ahmad Zahid asserted that Malaysia’s impartial yet principled approach is the correct strategy. He said it ensures the country’s national interests continue to be preserved effectively.

The approach also strengthens Malaysia’s position among the nations directly involved in the conflict. It solidifies relationships with other friendly countries globally.

“So the step was the right step because relatively speaking, even though Malaysia is a small country, the stance and international relations are indeed a bold move,” he concluded.
